A Healthy Food For One Person May Lead Another To Gain Weight

A healthy food for one person may lead another to gain weight, according to a study that suggests a one-size-fits-all approach to dieting is fundamentally wrong.

For instance, one woman in the study repeatedly experienced a spike in blood sugar after eating tomatoes, which would generally be considered a low-fat, nutritious food. The findings are based a study of 800 people in Israel, and are published in the journal Cell Press.

“ The first very big surprise and striking finding that we had was the very vast variability we saw in people’s response to identical meals,”said researcher Eran Segal of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.

Participants wore blood sugar monitors that took measurements every five minutes for an entire week. They also provided stool samples so that their gut microbiome could be analyzed, and kept a careful log of everything they consumed.None of the participants had diabetes, but some were obese and had a condition known as pre-diabetes.Researchers were stunned to see the difference in people’s metabolic responses to the exact same foods.

For instance, some people’s blood sugar rose higher after eating sushi than it did after eating ice cream. And for one middle-aged woman, the act of eating tomatoes which she thought were part of a healthy diet actually caused her blood sugar to rise significantly.

“There are profound differences between individuals — in some cases, individuals have opposite responses to one another — and this is really a big hole in the literature,” said Segal.”

What We Eat

High blood sugar is dangerous because it can lead to diabetes, obesity, heart problems and other complications, including eye, kidney and nerve disease. Many diets aim to keep blood sugar low by incorporating fruits, vegetables and complex carbohydrates like brown rice and whole grains, while avoiding refined sugars and goods made with white flour.

But those recommendations don’t work for everyone, and often, overweight people are blamed for eating too much or not sticking to a healthy lifestyle.

Co-author Eran Elinav said the study “really enlightened us on how inaccurate we all were about one of the most basic concepts of our existence, which is what we eat and how we integrate nutrition into our daily life.”

Instead of urging people to eat low-fat diets, a more personalized approach one that puts an individual at the centre of the plan, rather than the diet could be useful to help people control high blood sugar and improve their health, he said. The researchers also used their findings to forge an algorithm that could predict how different people would react to certain foods, based on a host of personal characteristics and their gut microbes.

Segal said he and colleagues are now working on a system that could bring better nutritional analysis to the individual consumer. The process would involve mailing stool samples for analysis of the bacteria in the digestive system, because researchers found that specific microbes correlated with blood sugar levels after eating.

Community Of Microbes

The microbiome is the community of trillions of bacteria living inside the human body, wielding a powerful but poorly understood effect on human health.

A group of 48 scientists from 50 US institutions called for more ambitious research into these tiny microorganisms, as part of a 10-year effort known as the Unified Microbiome Initiative Consortium that would uncover the role of individual microbes which include fungi, bacteria, viruses, algae and more and how they communicate with each other, their hosts, and their environment.

According to Minisha Sood, director of inpatient diabetes at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, the Israeli study highlights the importance of individualized nutrition dietary advice should vary from person to person and should be tailored to meet the needs of a given individual based on their reactions to different foods.

What remains to be deciphered is exactly how to tailor personalized nutrition therapy, added Sood, who was not involved in the study.

“Should it be based, at least in part, on an individual’s microbiome or gut flora?”
Rebecca Blake, senior director of Clinical Nutrition at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, said the role of the gut microflora contributing to obesity and metabolism “is certainly an evolving discipline within the field of nutrition science.”

“However, we need to consider whether this is the chicken or the egg — does our diet affect our gut microbiota and our obesity, or is the microbiota somehow causal when it comes to weight status?” added Blake, who not involved in the study either.

Ever Wondered What The Best Time For A Workout Is?

Research proves that there is a close relationship between the timing and the physical activities we perform both physically and psychology. It turns out that your muscles have their own circadian rhythm or you can say inner biological clock.

Dedicating Yourself To A Routine To Maximise Your Fitness
The perfect time to exercise depends on your personal preference as much as it does on your physiology.Research suggests that the body adapts to regular workout days and as well a standardised time. So if you tend to break into a sweat at 4 P.M. every day, you might eventually perform better at that hour than at any other time of the day.

The Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise that suggests sticking to a specific workout time to better your performance, improve your oxygen uptake, and lower exhaustion levels.

Working Out During The Day
Don’t exercise if you can’t fit in a workout before noon. Scientifically, your body temperature typically rises through the day, which in turn causes a peak in muscle strength and endurance late into the afternoon when your body temperature is at its highest that helps aid your workout, according to a study in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & Science in Sports.

Your hormonal and testosterone levels also play an important role in determining the optimal time for working out for both men and women.

Although your testosterone tends to peak even before you open your eyes (5 A.M), if you’re not an exceptionally early riser, you’re most likely going to be facing the impossible task of revving your body into a physically gruelling workout that early.

Study shows that the body also tends to produce large quantities of testosterone during late afternoons. Moreover, a 7 percent increase in anaerobic capacity, as stated by a 2011 study in the Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism journal, later during the day is added incentive to save the strength workouts for later.

Working Out In The Morning
Exercise increases your heart rate and subsequently your body temperature, working out too late in the evening (typically after 8 P.M.) can disrupt you sleep patterns.

Study shows that working out at some time around 7 A.M. on the other hand, as compared to 1 P.M. or 7 P.M., can help you catch sound sleep at night.

In fact, researchers found that people who exercised at 7 A.M. experienced 10 percent reduction in blood pressure through the day and a 25 percent dip in blood pressure at night. They also powered down faster at night and had better quality sleep cycles than people who exercised at other times of the day.

For those who looking to lose weight, several studies proves that people working out on an empty stomach can burn up to 20 percent more body fat.

Also that 45 minutes of moderate exercise at wee hours can help curb your appetite after a workout.
The timing of the day you choose for a workout has it’s own benefits. It is important to understand, however that you need to find a workout schedule that’s more realistic for you, regardless of the time of the day or night.

Although, it is natural to feel more motivated to exercise when your energy levels are high, and your body feels rested, consider opting to exercise when you are stressed or depressed.

Physical activity stimulates the release of your ‘feel good’ neurotransmitters, serotonin and dopamine, that instantly impact your mood for the better.

Although the body responds to exercise differently at different times of the day, it naturally responds better to a workout during the daytime.

Tips For Removing Earwax At Home

Earwax known as cerumen, is a yellowish waxy substance secreted in the ear canal of humans and other mammals. It protects the skin of the human ear canal, assists in cleaning and lubrication, and also provides some protection from bacteria, fungi, insects and water.

If you secrete an excessive amount of wax isn’t cleared effectively, it may build up and block your ear canal.

Earwax blockages commonly occur when people try to clean their ears on their own by placing cotton swabs or other items in their ears. This often just pushes wax deeper into the ear, rather than removing it.

Note: Talk to your doctor if you’re experiencing the signs and symptoms of earwax blockage.

4 Natural And Safe Tips For Removing Earwax At Home

Salt Water: Salt water is the best earwax removal solution that can be used at home.

Mix one teaspoon of salt in one-half cup of warm water until the salt dissolves completely.

Soak a cotton ball in the saline solution.

Tilt the affected ear up toward the sky. Squeeze the cotton ball to put a few drops of the saline water into the ear.

Stay in the same position for three to five minutes.

Tilt your head in the opposite direction to allow the saline water to drain out.

Clean the outer part of your ear with a clean cloth to remove the softened wax.

Warm Water:

Pour some warm water into the affected ear and leave for a few seconds.

 Let the water drain out.

Baking Soda:

Mix 1/4 teaspoon baking soda in 2 teaspoons water.

Tilt your head and drop several drops into the affected ear.

Wait for 10 minutes and flush warm water gently into the ear to clean it out.

Tilt your head in the opposite direction to drain out any excess solution as well as dissolved earwax.

Olive Oil:

 Slightly warm some olive oil.

Use a cotton ball or dropper to put 2 to 3 drops of olive oil into the ear that is affected by earwax buildup.

Allow it to settle for 8-10 minutes so that the earwax becomes soft.

Use a bulb syringe filled with warm water to flush out both the earwax and olive oil from your ear canal.

Signs And Symptoms Of Earwax Blockage May Include:

Feeling of fullness in the affected ear
Ringing or noises in the ear
Decreased hearing in the affected ear

Some people are naturally prone to earwax building up in their ears and may need frequent treatment to remove it when it becomes a problem.

Don't try to scrape out the earwax with your finger or an object inserted into your ear, as this this can make the problem worse. Speak to your doctor for advice if earwax builds up in your ears regularly.

 Massage half cup of mayonnaise to your hair.

 Leave it at least for 20 minutes and then shampoo your hair.

 This can be done once or twice a week.

Apply Shampoo Carefully: Too much shampoo can damage your hair. Avoid shampoos that contain sulfate and paraben. The number of times you should shampoo your hair depends on your hair texture.

People, who often complain about oily hair texture, feel the need to shampoo daily. They can opt for a mild shampoo and skip a day or two. Instead of shampooing daily, dust powder on your scalp to make the oil less visible.

Wash your hair with cold water, because hot water strips away protective oils from your scalp.

Healthy Diet: To get the maximum results from these home remedies for split ends, focus on a healthy diet. If you are unable to reach your target hair length and hair texture, you are probably not taking proper diet.

Make sure your diet is rich in vitamins, omega 3 fatty acids and protein. Eat fruits, vegetable, nuts and a lot of fish. Vitamin E, present in seeds and nuts, is the key ingredient to get you the hair that you desire.

Why Eating With Hands Is Good For Health

We have long been conditioned in the western world that eating appropriately meant using utensils such as forks, spoons and knives. Generally eating with the hands is left to pizza, hamburgers and little ones.

In some other countries, especially Pakistan, India, much of Africa and the Middle East, eating with one’s hands is appropriate etiquette and might actually prove to be healthier.

How Eating With Hands Is Healthy?

When we touch our food before putting it into our mouths the millions of nerve endings on the tips of our fingers are getting a temperature and texture reading that is immediately sent to the stomach like a warning signal.

Ayurvedic wisdom teaches that our bodies can respond to this food-touch by producing the needed enzymes and digestive juices before the food even meets our lips and that the fingers themselves even contain enzymes which start the digestive process upon first touch.

Experts say eating with the hands engages all the senses and keeps one present while eating. When food is touched with the hands, there is automatically more careful attention placed on it how you will retrieve it, what the temperature is, how much you can carry, how the hand must be held in order to keep the food in it.

Here Are The Top 4 Reasons You Should Start Eating With Your Hands.

Improving Digestion:

When we touch food with our hands the brain register that we are about to eat and in turn revs up our digestive system because touch is one of the most strong and often used sensations in the body.

Keeps You Healthy:

There are a certain bacteria found on our hands and fingertips this is a good bacterial which protects our immune system. When we eat with our hands we are using that bacteria to help our digestive system, mouth, throat and intestines.

Protects Your Mouth From Getting Burnt:

Your hands also act as a very effective temperature sensor. When we pick up food with our hands we can determine how hot or cold it is,thereby protecting out mouth from getting burnt.

Helps In Weight Loss:

Eating with our hands make us more mindful of what we are eating and how much we are eating. You are also concentrating on eating rather than watching tv or doing something else while eating.

The Right Soup Can Help You Lose Weight And Keep You Healthy

Soups are being served up as a healthy option for quick lunch breaks, for savouring in soup bars or for family meals.Soup can help by filling you up without too many calories, and by offering you an option to order at restaurants when you go out to eat with friends.

Canned soups are good for home-cooked diet meals. However, soup isn’t always the light meal it may seem, and some concoctions are wiser choices than others for dieters.

Here are a few ways to cut through the marketing spiel and make healthy choices when shopping for soup.

 How Soup Can Help
Watery foods, such as soups, can help you lose weight because of their low calorie density, or relatively low number of calories compared to their serving size.

Individuals who eat clear or broth-based soups may have a better chance at controlling their weight. Fiber and protein are filling nutrients, so choose a soup with ingredients such as vegetables, beans and lean protein.

From pumpkin and tomato to vegetable and carrot, the supermarket shelves are full of pre-prepared soups of all kinds. Whether in cartons, cans or served fresh in the chiller cabinet, there are certainly some good-quality soups out there. However, there’s also a fair share of soups that are laden with salt and additives with little nutritional value or health benefit.

Soup has grown in popularity in line with a general desire to eat more healthily and keep waistlines trim. The golden rule when choosing soup is to look at how much of the product is actually made up of vegetables! A vegetable content of at least 50% is the sign of a real soup that won’t need to be thickened with artificial additives.

If the ingredients are organic and in season, the only additives that should be needed are natural herbs and spices (like coriander, mint, chives, basil, etc.), and a touch of cream for certain recipes.

A hot bowl of soup that contains the right mixture of ingredients can be a nutritious and filling alternative to other types of cooked food.

Tips For Keeping Home-Made Soups Light And Healthy
 Replace potato with zucchini

 Thicken creamier soups with a little corn flour or starch

 Don’t add any fats (cream, butter, etc.) or grated cheese, try a dash of milk or some reduced-fat soft cheese

 Boost flavour with a pinch of celery salt, plus herbs and spices like coriander, nutmeg, curry powder, etc.

 Steam vegetables at a low temperature

Want To Try A Vegetarian Diet?

Many studies have shown a dramatic decrease in cancer risk in vegetarians. Some of these studies indicate that meat-eaters are at higher risk because of the fat present in meat, and that fat in vegetables is far less likely to cause cancer (specifically colon and breast cancer).

Vegetarians are at lower risk for heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and hypertension because of the nutrients and phytochemicals present in plants. While these benefits are great, they are only guaranteed by a properly balanced vegetarian diet, not one full of processed, vegetarian-friendly foods.

The guide below will help you navigate the most common questions and issues when becoming a vegetarian.

Protein: How do you get enough protein? It may not seem obvious, but almost all plants (plus dairy and eggs) contain some amount of protein. Vegetarians just have to work a little harder to make sure they’re getting enough protein once you get used to it, finding protein is a breeze.

Some of the best options are: eggs, Greek yogurt, beans, and soy products. You’ve probably eaten some tofu and maybe even tempeh, another soy protein, but have you heard of seitan? For those of you who don’t like soy, seitan is a great alternative.

Seitan is a protein made from wheat gluten, which provides it with an even higher protein count than tofu.

Nutrients: Vegetarians sometimes have low levels of iron, zinc, calcium, or vitamin B-12 or D. But good news: nearly all vegetarian foods contain these nutrients. It’s up to you to make sure you’re eating a good balance of each.

To get calcium, turn to dark greens (spinach, broccoli, etc.) or milk. Beans contain iron and vitamin D is added to many foods such as dairy or plant milk, cereals, or margarine. B-12 is almost exclusively available in meat products,so daily B-vitamin is recommended for many vegetarians.

Weight: No diet or lifestyle is inherently conducive to losing weight; only reduced calories guarantees weight loss. That said, most vegetarian foods are less calorically dense than omnivore ones, allowing you to eat more volume for fewer calories. That is, if you eat a proper amount of veggies.

Even veggie proteins are lower in cals: 3 oz. of tofu has 79 calories, while 3 oz. of chicken has 131 calories. So while weight loss is not guaranteed with a vegetarian diet, you might find it easier to lose weight when you lose the meat.

Effort: If you want to go vegetarian but end up buying a lot of processed, pre-made meals, you probably won’t feel any different than when you were eating meat. But if you do your research and figure out your body needs, you’re likely to find going vegetarian to be an easy switch.

Keep it simple, eat mostly “Green” foods (fruits and veggies), pick a complex carbohydrate (potatoes, whole wheat pasta, brown rice), and add some protein (eggs, beans, tofu). And most importantly, enjoy your food!
